January 29, 2010

Friday

I’m waiting for Daniel to call me. He is taking an exam right now, and after he is done, we are going up to SLC to Emily’s concert.

So far it hasn’t been too exciting a week. I have a test coming up that I haven’t studied much for; but other than that, I’ve been keeping up really well with all of my assignments in school, I’ve been working out just about every day and I’ve been reading a lot. I finished listening to Hard Times by Charles Dickens about a week ago. I listened while I ran; but it was really hard to concentrate on running and listening at the same time, so I don’t listen to books anymore. But I think I decided that Charles Dickens novels are not easy for me to follow. The language is difficult, and I get lost in it sometimes (just like in Adam Bede). But I like his stories. I remember reading A Tale of Two Cities in High School and really liking it. Maybe I just need to read more of him and familiarize myself with his writing.

Today I finished reading Nefertiti by Michelle Moran, and let me tell you: it was a sad book! I didn’t cry, but after I finished it, I just felt so hollow and sad. And Nefertiti’s story really intrigued me (because, obviously the novel was based on a real Egyptian queen), and I started looking things up on the internet about her. I found a woman who has written several books about Egypt, especially the royalty, mainly the famous rulers. I’m excited to read them once I’m done with school. I’ve always had a fascination for certain countries, and Egypt was one of them. I’d love to learn more about it.

Basically that’s all that’s consumed my life. Nefertiti, Daniel and school. But last night, there was a Relief Society meeting where we learned about sewing and I started making a jean skirt out of some old jeans. It’s going to turn out so cute! I’m excited. I haven’t gotten that far on it yet, but I’m excited to. And it was fun to eat, and talk to and meet girls from the ward I don’t know. I wasn’t planning on staying very long because I was so tired last night; but it was actually really fun and I gained energy just being there.

I joined our ward’s intramural soccer team, and we had a game on Wednesday. I had so much fun playing! I forgot how much I like playing sports sometimes. All of us there played the entire time, so we got tired. It’s lucky I’ve been running so much, or I would have been dead. As it was, I did pretty good actually. I was running hard, but I wasn’t getting too tired. Anyway, we kicked trash. I think the final score was 1-6, our win. I am SUPER-sore now, though. I ran harder than I have in a long time, and it’s taking a toll on my legs.

On Tuesday of this week, I had a quiz in my Irish dance class over the dances we have learned so far. I did pretty well I think. I don’t know, I’ll have to go back and watch the video of myself to be sure. But I’d been practicing the dances at home, and I got all of the steps right, and in the right order, which was exciting. We started learning a new dance yesterday, and it seems really cool, so far. And I’m excited to be learning a new dance. I’m having a lot of fun in my dance class, and it makes me wonder why I’ve never done dance before, in or out of school.

I’m a little frustrated with myself and with school. I feel, lately, that I haven’t been that open-minded or wise in my decisions. Of course, I think marrying Daniel was the best decision ever; but I mean as far as my studies have gone. I think there are so many more things I could’ve studied that I would’ve liked just as much (or better) than Physiology and Developmental Biology, and that would’ve provided me a career when I graduated. And it doesn’t help that I don’t really know what I WANT to do. It makes studying seem so pointless now, and it’s really hard to focus all of the time. This week, I had a really hard time focusing in class. So…we’ll see how this, my last semester of college, goes.

Tuesday

Well, not much has been going on. Daniel and I are studying right now, nothing new there. Last week, I did a little better in my running, running more laps in between my walking laps. Now I’m up to jogging a mile before walking. And it’s getting easier and more fun. Plus Daniel comes with me every day, which makes it more fun.

Saturday was our 8 month anniversary. We didn’t do anything really cool. We did go out to breakfast at Mimi’s, which was good. But then we spent the whole day working on things and studying. I gave a talk on Sunday; it was really hard to make it flow, but I think it went well overall. It was based on a talk by Elder Holland entitled “the Ministry of Angels”, and it was a really good one.

I’m having the hardest time focusing these days. I haven’t been able to focus in my classes as much as I would like to, and doing schoolwork is such a chore. I have senioritis really bad! But, I’m determined to stick it out and do my best … which means that next month I had better buckle down and do better than I have been. I’m just so tired. And it’s hard to stay focused on something that I don’t see an end result in. I mean, of course I’m going to graduate and all, and that’s good. But I don’t know what I’m going to do with my degree, and that’s discouraging and frustrating, and it makes me not want to work as hard. Plus, even with all that I’ve done while I have been at school, I feel like I missed out on a lot that I could have easily done. And I’m frustrated with myself, because I didn’t do certain things, and I didn’t pay more attention to what I should have studied.

Anyway, I’m really good and happy, though, despite these things. I feel really blessed of the Lord, and I know that even though I don’t know what I’ll be doing and I feel like I have no direction, He has a plan for me, and everything will work out for the best, for me and my family. I have no doubts.

Yesterday, Daniel and I did FHE on creating a gospel-sharing home, based on a talk by Elder Ballard. It inspired me to do better with that and to work harder at being a more devout member of the church.

Monday

I had meant to write yesterday, but it was a pretty busy day, so I’m making up for it by writing early today. Hopefully I can get everything that I want to write in a short amount of time, so that I can start doing the homework and other things I need to do.

So last time I wrote, I was fairly distressed about my future and about my life. It was a hard first week of school. After I wrote, I talked to Daniel about some of the things that were bothering me, and I actually felt a lot better after having talked about it. That was good! Then, all week, as I was thinking about it, I realized that it doesn’t really matter what I do, because I have Daniel, and he’s all that really matters anyway. I could do anything. I could go back to school one day if I really want to. I’m not that worried about my future anymore. I know that everything will work out for the best, even if it’s hard.

Kathryn came over on Thursday night to watch a movie and hang out and eat really good food. The movie we watched was kind of dumb, and not a warm fuzzy movie at all, even thought it was a chic flic. After the movie was over, she started talking about her life now and her plans, and the whole thing felt so empty and hollow to me. I can’t imagine going from being married to not, and having to jump back into the dating, single scene, having to figure out your life alone, living with roommates. It would be so awful. And Kat seemed so focused on working, on having a career, and not on the things that, as Latter-day Saint women, she should be focusing on. During the movie, she was incredulous that the girl would quit her dream job to move all the way across the country to be with the guy she loves. That seemed like the right thing to do, to me. But Kat thought the girl was idiotic. It seems to me that she has her priorities all mixed up now. Isn’t it better to be with the people you care most about than have a huge, successful career? Anyway, it was this realization that snapped me out of it and helped me to stop worrying about being huge and successful.

It wasn’t that fun hanging out with Kathryn. Her whole life sounds so shallow and empty to me. Every time she talks about what she’s doing and planning, I feel empty. I don’t know how that works. I shouldn’t be so feeling about this, but I can’t help it. And I don’t know why I feel like that. It’s just not that fun to hang out with her anymore. She’s so mixed up. Maybe I’m so mixed up.

Anyway, last week was a really good week. I’m really enjoying my classes and meeting new people in my classes. This semester is so different than any of my other semesters, in terms of classes and people. I’ve never been in class with so many people I know or so many people who are so friendly. Before, when I was single, it seemed that none of the guys in my class would talk to me (which is tragic, considering the majority of classmates in my major are guys) because they were all married, and I wasn’t. Like I was some sort of threat to their marriage or something. And it really bothered me, so I kept to myself a lot and didn’t make an effort to meet people in my classes or talk to them. But I think I’ve broken out of that. I’m learning to not care so much what people think, and just talk to them, regardless. And, you know, life is a lot more fun that way. It’s way cooler to meet people and to talk to them and be kind to them. I hope I can keep this up, because it seems to come in phases, in waves. I’d like not to go back down to the troughs where I was before, though.

Monday was Adam McMurtrey’s birthday. So Dan and I went over to their apartment to play games and eat good food. There were a couple other couples, and a few single people. All of them I’d met before. And we had a lot of fun! We played Guesstures and another game. We didn’t get to bed until late that night.

I’m really loving my dance class. We have finished learning our first solo dance, and now we are working on our first paired dance. In Thursday in class, we had to pair up with someone, and I was asked to dance by this really tall guy in my class. It was pretty ridiculous watching ourselves in the mirror dancing. I’m so short, he was huge. But it was fun. It would be way better if Daniel was in that class with me. We would have so much fun dancing together and learning together. Oh, well! I still really have fun in that class. I wish I had started taking dancing classes earlier on!

On Friday night, Daniel and I went on a date. After school, I went right home while he stayed on campus to work with his group. I wasn’t feeling super, so I ate and took a long nap and looked up potential job opportunities and did a little research. Then when Daniel was done and I’d gone to pick him up, we went to the temple to do sealings, we went to Zupas for dinner (which was delicious, and Daniel loved it!), and then went to a movie at the dollar theater. We saw “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs”. It was such a fun movie, Daniel really loved it. He had wanted to see another animated movie, but I didn’t want to see that one. He told me to pick, so I picked the one I wanted to see. He was afraid it was going to be stupid, but he ended up thinking it was hilarious. Point for me! It was a pretty ordinary date, but he really enjoyed it and had fun, and I did too.

Saturday morning, I went to a baby shower for Stephanie. Her baby is due any day now, but her friends here threw her a shower and invited me. It was okay. Her friends didn’t talk to me at all, and even when I tried to enter the conversation, they would just look at me and continue talking to themselves. It was pretty lame, and I was actually pretty surprised at that. Most people in Utah try to make a better effort to get to know people and be kind. But they REALLY didn’t. So, I tried to talk and be kind, I talked to Stephanie when I could. But it was just weird. We decorated little onesies, took a quiz about Stephanie’s pregnancy, ate good food, and gave Stephanie suggestions about little girls’ names (since she and Bowman are having difficulties coming up with one).

Later that day, Daniel and I went shopping. We had a whole list of things to do, but we only got one of them done: buy me new running shoes. We went to Runner’s Corner and I tried on SO MANY pairs of running shoes, ran around in them, had someone watch me run to analyze my step, etc., etc. Finally, we landed with a good pair of shoes, and I’m hoping they’ll help me learn to run better and help me achieve my goal. My other shoes were too tight and not really specific to running. So, we’ll see.

We tried to study that day, but we were both not feeling great and we were both so tired. So we did a little bit of studying, went to the gym to work out (we did elliptical machines), and then went to Bowman and Stephanie’s later. They were having an Indian food night. SUCH GOOD FOOD! And a bunch of people were there, and we played speed scrabble. It was really fun.

Yesterday I got a new calling: Relief Society instructor. I didn’t see that coming AT ALL! I had only been in the RS meeting committee for a few months, and then all of a sudden I have a new calling. A more nerve-racking calling. It’ll be good, though. I know it’s important, and I know I can’t do it well alone. So I’ll be using a lot of help from other people and from Heavenly Father. Church was good. I feel so much more in the ward now than I did even a month and a half ago. I don’t know how that happened all of a sudden. But I guess I’ve been meeting people gradually, and I’ve been making a real effort to magnify my calling and visiting teaching. Plus, I’m making more of an effort to speak up in church, to volunteer my thoughts, to pray and read aloud. I’ve been learning a lot about myself and my capabilities since being married. I have a lot of potential that I never really realized before, and I love life a lot more when I’m trying harder.

Well, I had a meeting for relief society after church, and then Daniel and I played two games of Ticket to Ride, we took a nap, and then we made dinner. We had the Williams (our next door neighbors) over for dinner, finally … after living here for 5 months. It was really fun. We made some really delicious chicken fajitas. They’re really fun, good people. When they left, our home teachers came, and we talked with them for a long while. Then when they left, our other neighbors came … no, just kidding. But it does sound like we had a ton of people over last night, huh? Actually, when our home teachers left, Daniel and I stayed on the couched and talked for a while, over an hour, just about random stuff, our families, etc. It was way good. And then we went to bed.

And today, I have a lot to do, so I’m going to get going.

 January 10, 2010

Sunday

It seems like weeks ago that I last wrote, even though I know it was only a few days ago. This last week of school has been crazy, even though it’s only been the first one. The homework and reading assignments started up right away, of course, so Dan and I spent a lot of time reading and studying this week, surprisingly for the first week. Usually I put off doing my assignments until the last possible moment, so that I can do other things. But that usually doesn’t end up very well, so I got a jump start and finished everything I had to do by yesterday.

Then also this week, Daniel and I had to go to the temple twice, because last week we didn’t get a chance to. I had a doctor’s appointment for the rash on my back, on Tuesday morning, so we decided we would already be close to the temple and go after my appointment. The doctor gave me an anti-fungal cream that seems to be working really well. Then we did a session at the temple and had to rush off to class afterwards. I had my dance class at noon, and I was really late. It was okay, though, because we were only going over the syllabus, and we got out 30 minutes early. Our second temple attendance came on Thursday night. We just did initiatories because we didn’t have much time. Dan had a lot of studying to do. He worked for National Guard and wanted to get a head start on his homework so he wouldn’t be behind when he was done with this weekend.

Wednesday was a crazy day. I have class from 8-12 Monday, Wednesday and Friday, so I thought I would be done at noon every other day. Well, I have a meeting with the professor I TA for and the other TAs in the afternoon now. And, I was contacted about being in the Student Council for the College of Life Sciences, which requires going to a class at 4pm on Wednesdays. It’s alright, though. It’s just time I would’ve been on campus anyway, just studying. Wednesdays have always been a little crazy since I’ve been in school. It seems to be the day when lots of things and classes take place. So after all my responsibilities, I met up with Daniel at the indoor track, and we went running together. When we got home, I cleaned up a bit, and then I went over to my next-door neighbor’s house, because she was having a girl’s night. We just talked and made treats. It was really fun, and refreshing to hang out with girls again, especially ones from my ward. I felt like I connected a little bit that night with my ward. It was good.

Thursday night, before Daniel and I went to the temple, I went to Inga Bowen’s baby shower. It was really fun to see her. She’s supposed to have her baby in, like a week and a half! That’s exciting! The women invited to the shower were all married, most of them with kids. So they were all talking about their experiences with pregnancy and child birth, and it was kind of funny. They were all really nice, though. And there was some delicious food!

Friday night, since Daniel was gone, I went to the ward temple night with Adam and Liz. The temple was ridiculously busy that night and we waited for an hour in the chapel before we could get into a session. But it was really good.

Dan and I have been trying to get back into the groove of school. Especially adjust our sleeping schedules. Over the break, we didn’t have great sleeping habits, and it’s taking its toll on us now. We aren’t used to going to bed early or waking up early. So we have been super tired and grumpy this last week. I think it will take some adjusting.

Yesterday, I spent all day doing homework, reading, working on my resume, and watching tv on the internet. I got really into the Hunger Games last night and stayed up later than Daniel reading it. He left early this morning to go to work, and I went to church with Adam and Liz. It was ward conference today, and I heard so many things I needed to hear. I should have written them down, but I have felt so apathetic about so many things these days. It’s kind of weird; I have made all these goals for this semester. And so far I haven’t been doing very well, but not very poorly either. I ran once this week, just because I got really sore towards the end of the week and didn’t want to get any injuries. But I did lift weights both days that I was scheduled to do. I didn’t read my scriptures in the morning everyday this week, but I did a few. I just need to get used to that. And here I am writing in my journal.

Anyway, my point is, I’m not doing too badly with my goals thus far. But this week was hard in a weird way. I was sad and upset for I don’t even really know why, a few days this week. I felt unsatisfied. And then, this weekend, I just got tired of caring so much, so I just stopped and became apathetic and didn’t want to try so hard anymore. Not a great way to go, I think. It’s as if not having a plan has made me a little lost. I feel like I’m wandering, without any real direction. Sure, I’m going to graduate this semester. But then what? I don’t know what I want in this life anymore. I want to be good, I want to take care of my family. But is that all I’m to set out to do? Isn’t there more I could be doing?

But going to church helped me, as it usually does. I stopped being apathetic. I felt a little bit of God’s love for me. That doesn’t help me completely, though. I still feel lost, despite my long praying and going to the temple for direction. And part of me says I should be searching a little deeper, do more research, apply for more things. But … I’m tired. Tired of not knowing even what I want.

When I was a Junior in high school, I really searched deep within myself, asking a myriad of questions about what I want from life, and I wrote down my answers. I really wish I had that now, just to see what I wanted to do back then. My thought is that I should do that again. Do an in-depth study of myself. Maybe that’s what I need; maybe that’s what will help. I don’t know.

  1.          What are my life-long goals?
  2.     What do I want?
  3.     Under the realm of reality, what do I want to do in life?
  4.     What is it I should be working towards after graduation?
  5.     What sorts of things do I want to accomplish with my life?
  6.     Who is important to me?
  7.     Why should I try?
  8.     Why should I care?
  9.     What are my needs?
  10.    What makes me feel good about myself?
  11.    What do I love?
  12.    What do I want to learn?
  13.    What skills do I want to learn? Will they be of any real use to me in the long run?
  14.    What are my greatest weaknesses?
  15.    What are my greatest strengths?
  16.    Do I want to work?
  17.    What does my husband expect from me?
  18.    What does the Lord expect of me?
  19.    What good reasons are there in trying so hard?
  20.    What is the will of God for me? What is His plan for my life?

Monday

YEAY FOR THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL!!! This is the first day of my last semester at BYU. How weird is that? It was a good day, not very different from all of the other first days of school that I’ve had. We mainly went over the class and how it will all play out. Only my endocrinology class actually went into some introductory material. It should be a really good semester. Really hard, but good. I’m only taking 3 really hard classes (Advanced Molecular Biology, Endocrinology, and Developmental Biology), so I should be able to manage. My other classes (Irish Dance, Bio120 TA, and Advanced Molecular Biology Lab) are either just for fun or required for me to graduate, but none of them will be too time consuming.

When I was done with classes, I went to the bookstore to get a packet for one of my classes. Daniel and I ordered all of our books online, so we got them over the last couple of weeks and for way cheaper than the bookstore. The bookstore was CRAZY!! I always forget that I need to go earlier in the day to beat the crowds, and then every semester when I make the mistake of going after classes, I remember that I shouldn’t. Oh, well! After school, I went to the grocery store to pick up some of the things we need but didn’t get at Costco. Then I came home and ate, and then started getting my school life organized.

This last weekend was a good one. On Friday night (January 1), Daniel and I went with Bowman and Stephanie over to Michelle’s family’s house to play games. Michelle is Michael’s (Dan’s brother) wife. The whole reason that Daniel and I wanted to come home a little earlier was so that we could spend some time with Michael and Michelle and their family. It was fun to go over and play games. We played Settler’s of Catan, which was fun. Dan and I played on a team because both of us were a little shaky on how to play. It had been a while. Plus, everyone else playing was super-competitive, so we didn’t really care how well we did. Although on our second round, we did pretty good, we only had two more points to win when Bowman finally announced that he won.

Saturday (January 2), Dan and I slept in (we spent a couple of hours finishing Harry Potter before going to bed, so we didn’t get to bed until after 2 in the morning), and then went out to get some things done. We went to Costco to buy food and things, we tidied up the house and finished laundry, and we got ready. That night, we went again with Bowman and Stephanie up to Salt Lake City, where we went out to dinner with Big John, Mom and Dad Holbrook, and Michael and Michelle. John took us out to the Melting Pot, which is a Fondue restaurant. It was way fun! They serve 4 courses, each of them involving some sort of fondue. First, the cheeses: a fondue cheese dip with veggies, breads, chips and other things; you take your skewer and dip something in two types of cheeses. Next came a salad (which didn’t actually involve Fondue pots at all, but were still really good). Third was the main course, or entrée: we were each brought a collection of raw meats (chicken, beef, duck, shrimp, salmon, etc.), which we were to skewer and put into a pot of broth, 2 cooking styles for each table, and wait for them to get done. This course was crazy with 9 people because there were 18 skewers in both pots at a given time, and it was a challenge trying to get your skewer out without disturbing or pulling out some others. But it was really fun, and really tasty! We got some dipping sauces too, and it was fun to try different combinations of meat, cooking style, and dip! Lastly, of course, came the dessert: two different types of chocolate dipping sauce (I think ours were s’mores and cookies ‘n’ crème), and we were brought plates per couple of fruits, brownies, marshmallows, rice crispy treats and other treats. This was probably my favorite part. The strawberries and bananas, brownies and rice crispy treats were just incredible, especially in the right kind of chocolate sauce. It was seriously good! I want a fondue pot and those recipes for always. Dan didn’t participate too much in the cheese sauces or chocolate because of his new year’s resolution not to eat any dairy or anything with dairy. But we did decide to go back there when his 4 months are up! I hope he was serious about that! It was very fun.

Church yesterday was good. Dan and I went right to bed when we got home, but I was still exhausted the next day at church, and it was hard to stay awake and listening the whole time. Dan pressured me to get up and bear my testimony, but I really didn’t feel up to it, and I didn’t feel guilty about not getting up. I feel like I should want to first, but I decided that I probably should next month, because it’s been a while. Daniel did get up to bear his, though, and he did great. He’s always so composed when speaking in front of a group of people, so calm and collected, so cool. There’s a girl in my ward that has been sitting next to me in Relief Society the last few Sundays in our ward (not over the break, of course), and she doesn’t seem the type that would be my friend, or that would even want to. So, I’m a little suspicious of her, which is not good. I should be glad that she’s making such an extraordinary effort. It is just a little strange to me, usually I have to make all the effort. We’ll see what happens there, though. Our lesson in RS was good; our RS president taught it about the Relief Society and about Visiting Teaching. It really increased my appreciation for the RS, which is good, because I’ve never really loved it like I do the Young Women’s program or Primary.

Last night, Dan and I went to his parent’s house for dinner. The whole family was there (except Zach, Hillary and Riley), including Grandma and Big John. It was quite and crowd and very fun. I loved how many babies were there: Evan, Brixton, and Brooklyn. It was great! I held Brooklyn for a little while, she’s SO cute! Daniel and I didn’t stay too long. We took a family picture, Dan got a blessing for school from his dad, and then we took off. We worked on our family mission statement on the way home. Well, mostly I worked on it; we discussed things, and I added them to it and made it look pretty. And when we got home, we just got ready for bed, cleaned up and went to bed, fairly early to prepare for school.

 January 1, 2010

Friday

Can you believe it’s 2010?? Last year was a wonderful year, so many great things happened. I have a feeling this year will be like that. I’m graduating in 2010, so I know at least one exciting thing will happen for sure.

Just this last week Daniel and I did some fun things with my family before coming back to Utah: made ginger bread houses, played Shadows Over Camelot with Scott, played Ticket to Ride with mom and Scott; I went to a movie with mom and Diane on Wednesday (December 30), The Blind Side, which was AMAZING!; Dan went to do archery with Scott again on Monday; Dan and I went to Ashland and walked around, and bought some Christmas decorations. We had a good time this break! It was fun to have Christmas with family and Daniel all at once! We read a lot of Harry Potter; finished the 6th book, and started the 7th.

Then on New Year’s Eve, we packed up, picked Brianna up, and drove back to Utah. The weather was not great, the roads were icy, and it started snowing in one part, so it took us 16 hours to drive back. We got to Daniel’s parents house just after midnight, bringing in the New Year in the car (lame!), and we stopped for a little break and to see his family. So by the time we actually rolled into Provo, it was around 2 o’clock in the morning. We were exhausted.

We spent most of today just relaxing and unpacking and cleaning up. I already miss my family. Diane and Mary are lame and don’t do things with me anymore. That makes me sad/bitter.

Another year gone. Such great things happened in 2009: I went to school, I got married, Dan and I went to Mexico, I lived in CA near Julie, I saw my family a lot more than usual, I got closer to the Holbrooks (who I love so dearly, all of them), Dan and I have a wonderful marriage thus far, and I started my last year of college. More exciting things are bound to come.
