Jack Turns 4

When did this happen? I am not in the business of loving my children growing up. I keep telling them to slow it down, but, like always, they don't listen.

Anyway. Jack turned 4 yesterday, and it was quite a birthday. I stayed up late the night before, decorating and wrapping presents, and swooning over all the old Jack pictures I was printing off. For example:

I digress again.

He woke up to presents, balloons and orange glowsticks on the table and a new outfit (with a rhino on it) to wear. He opened his presents before the girls left for school, and his favorite present by far was the remote control police car we'd gotten him. Also, 2 really cool books (diggersaurs and a book about dirt with all kinds of trucks in it). He played with it almost non stop and was so sad later in the day when he couldn't find it. (We eventually did find it)

Our cute little neighbor, McKray, came over to play with him for a couple of hours, and he watched some truck videos and listened to just about all the truck tunes he wanted.

When the girls went to Harvey's birthday party, the boys and I had a fun little outing: we drove down to the Disney store. Someone had given us a Disney store gift card when Jack was born, and there was still some money left on it. I thought this was a fitting way to use the rest -- we went to the store, and he picked out something to buy. It really didn't take him long. He picked out something much too expensive at first, and then afterward chose the set with 9 cars in it! 😂 Of course.

On the way home, an ambulance drove next to us for several minutes, which he was in heaven about. And when we were sitting down to dinner, some construction trucks were right outside our house, fixing a hole in the rode. He watched until they were just about done. And then, of course, it was trash day for us, so he got to watch the garbage trucks. I said all these vehicles must've known it was Jack's birthday and made a showing just for him.

He chose hotdogs and "chickie nuggies" for dinner, and I added some veggies in my own, though he's the only one that didn't eat any. And his cake was decorated with a tractor harvesting some veggies.

It was quite a day for my quite a boy.

Jack is our funny little man. He's silly and funny and likes to make us laugh. He has very few interests, but he is very devoted to those interests. His favorite color is orange, and his favorite animal is the rhinoceros. He also loves dinos. He's a snuggler, and often asks me or Daniel to snuggle with him and his blankie on the couch. He's developed a love for reading, and, aside from his truck books, he loves Mercy Watson and The Princess in Black series. Until recently, he's had nightmare problems and used to wake up at least a few times a night crying. Bugs were his main problem, but snakes were also mentioned a few times. He kept thinking bugs or snakes were there in his bed or room. Thankfully, we seem to have turned a corner there, and he hasn't been waking up in the middle of the night at all for a few weeks. He loves watching videos, mostly of trucks, but he'll tolerate other things that the girls pick, and I love hearing him giggle over something funny in a movie or show. He's still our best and most enthusiastic dancer, and he loves music. He loves his preschool group, his little friends, and he's always excited to go to preschool. He plays really well with Brooke pretty much all the time, and sometimes with Camille (when she's in the mood to be nice to him). He loves Sawyer and is so sensitive to his little feelings. Just today, when I took the kids to the park, I put Sawyer down on the grass for a minute to help one of he girls, and Sawyer started fussing. Jack immediately stopped what he was doing and went over to be with Sawyer and help him feel better. And Sawyer stopped fussing. It was the sweetest thing to see. We sure love our Jack. I'm so glad he's mine.

Sawyer is 11 months old today, and I just have all the feelings about it. I am loving this stage in him so much. He is cute and serious and ticklish and loves being with me and is too busy to cuddle (except occasionally when he's really tired, he'll lay his head on my shoulder as I sing to him before I put him to bed. And on a very rare occasion, when he's so tired he falls asleep while I feed him a bottle... then I get to snuggle him for a few minutes while he sleeps, before I put him down. 😍😭). He has the most dignified little crawl I've ever seen, and it cracks me up.  He's crawling on hands and knees regularly now, and he takes his crawl at a brisk, yet easy pace -- just fast enough that you know he's got somewhere to be, but slow enough that you know he doesn't care too deeply about it. He holds his head high and crawls, with a little jaunty wiggle in his bum. It's a gentleman's crawl, for sure. 😂

Sawyer has discovered the joy that comes in the kitchen. He especially loves the drawer where I keep all the baggies and foil and such. He loves to pull all the baggies out of the box and unroll the foil.

The other day, as I was making dinner, I put a bag of potatoes on the floor of the pantry, and he crawled over to it, pulled a potato out of the bag, and started gnawing on it. It was hilarious. And since then, he's been chewing on a potato quite a lot when I'm doing something in the kitchen. It makes me laugh.

He's now climbing the stairs like a pro, and oftentimes, after he's climbed all the way up, he'll stay sitting at the top of the stairs and cry until I come get him and bring him down. He likes to climb up. But he doesn't like being upstairs by himself with no way to get down. I've been working to teach him how to get down safely. But I think he's nervous. He's fallen down a few stairs a few times, and even though he's always been okay, he seems scared to try doing it by himself.

I find him extremely adorable.

Spring Break

The kids had spring break this past week, coming right off of Easter week. I was so excited to have them home for the week, not have to get up and get them off to school, spend time together. I had intended to make it a fun spring break, even though we weren't going anywhere.

Our first day, we just spent at home, trying to get all our chores done and the house cleaned up the first day, so that we wouldn't have to do any more work for the rest of the week. The kids were highly motivated by this idea, and also by the promise of watching some TV afterwards.

And we also went to Sammy's house to play (and for my book club meeting with the ladies). They had a good time playing with all the kids.

DeAnna and I had planned to go to capitol reef National Park the next day. But we decided against it because the weather wasn't going to be great. Instead, she brought her kids over for a movie and to play for a bit. My kids loved playing with her kids, and talked endlessly about them for days afterwards. I think my girls have little crushed on her older boys. 😂

I took the kids to the zoo on Wednesday. We hadn't been to a zoo in quite a long time; since before we moved here, which was 2 years ago. And I thought my kids would like it. We all had a really great time at the zoo, despite it being quite busy and also that we were required to wear masks the whole time. We took a picnic with us, walked around the zoo and looked at the animals, and had a lovely time. And surprisingly, everyone was mostly happy almost the whole time! They loved seeing the animals, and we had very meaningful discussions about endangerment and how to care for animals and our earth. It have me a little glimpse of how homeschooling could be with them. 😍

Even little baby dude was such a trooper, since he missed his afternoon nap so we could go. (I guess he and Jack did both fall asleep in the car on the way home...)

The last 2 days of our break weren't as fun. We stayed home, mostly. The kids played with friends off and on, and with each other constantly. We watched TV and snacked and just had a chill couple of days. It was just nice having them home all the time, and not be constrained by schedules of any kind.

Jack, when I was pushing him and spinning him in the swing in our tree, giggling as he said it:

I have snakes in my belly!!

This picture is from Easter. It was such a beautiful day, and the kids couldn't help but play outside.

Happy Easter

I did preschool this week, and the focus was spring. I did a little on spring and some on Easter. We did an Easter egg hunt for one of our activities and it was a big hit! The kids loved it so much that we hid all the eggs again for them to hunt!

This weekend was general conference weekend as well as Easter.

All this week we've been having special Easter scripture study, focusing on the last week of the Savior's life. And we had our Jerusalem supper on Thursday, the same day as the Last Supper.

We went to Gramma and Grampa Holbrook's house for conference on Saturday, and then Daniel and I went to a play, "The play that went wrong", which big John had invited us to, while my in-laws watched all the kids at their house. It was a fun play, very funny, and we had a good time.

We finished general conference at Gramma and Grampa's house and had an Easter egg hunt at their house afterwards. Their backyard is so perfect for egg hunts. It's big and has lots of good places to hide eggs. And we had a ton of eggs to hide and find, when we added their eggs to ours. It was a nice day we spent with Gramma and Grampa.

Conference finished on Easter, and we hung out as a family and I made a good Easter dinner. It was a pretty relaxed day.
