Sarah and I made an appointment to get the girls ears pierced at a place in Salt Lake City called Abyss. Sarah had heard that piercing via the hollow needle method was better than the piercing guns they use at Claire's. I had never seen this method done, so it was a learning experience for me. I had mine done at Claire's, but apparently there are strong opinions and some controversy about how Claire's pierces ears.
We went together on Tuesday afternoon. I had to drag the boys along with us (which was quite disappointing to Brooke ... she wanted it to be just us 4 girls. But my babysitter didn't show up to watch the younger kids. The boys came with us and Camille started home by herself).
The girls chose matching earrings, same color, just different sizes. We signed the paperwork, and then they had to decide who was going first. Brooke decided she would go.
The guy doing the piercing explained what he was going to do and let us ask questions. Brooke was pretty nervous about it. He cleaned and sanitized everything -- his hands, Brooke's ears, the earrings and the supplies he was using. He made dots on her ears and measured them against her head to make sure they were perfectly even, and he got himself ready and set to pierce her ears. When he sat down, he said, "Okay. I'm going to get all ready, and then I'll tell you I'm ready and you let me know if YOU are ready for me to go ahead." She was so nervous! Poor girl. But she still wanted to go through with it. So when he was ready, she nodded her head, and he pierced her ears! She gasped a little at first, but he was so fast. He pushed the needle through, almost to the end of it, and then he attached another piece to it and kept pulling it through until that second piece was through her ears. Then he detached the needle and put the earring backing onto the piece through her ear, and pulled until the backing was through her ear. It was really kind of a cool process to watch. He put the earring front onto the back that was already in her ear, and moved on to the next ear.
Brooke felt so much better after the first one was done. She realized it wasn't as bad as she thought, just a little prick, and so she was much less nervous for the second ear. And it went just as fast. And then her ears were pierced! She was so excited! And it looked so cute, and now she looks so grown up!
Claire went next and we waited in the sitting area for her to be done. It was a fun little excursion for these girls. 😊
