Saturday was a long day. Welll... let me back up. We spent all of last week preparing for our trip: methodically cleaning the house, getting haircuts, eating through our food, cleaning out the fridge, doing laundry, getting school ready for while we would be gone, etc. It was quite a lot and I felt a little overwhelmed at the thought of everything.
I missed book club and bunco that week in order to get things ready. The girls finished swim lessons on Thursday and got tested for covid on Friday. We packed, we finished cleaning and doing laundry...
The night before our flight, we had dinner on the floor and watched a documentary about Hawaii. The kids were so excited. It was like Christmas was the next day.
We woke up between 6 and 7 to get ready and go, and when we got to the SLC airport, we still had to rush through to make our flight. We made quite the spectacle: 4 kids (and therefore 4 car seats), 3 huge suitcases, 1 carry on, Sawyer in a hiking backpack on Daniel's back, each of the rest of us with a backpack (or even 2. Camille had a backpack, a purse, a blankie and a pillow she was carrying through the airports) and a huge reusable grocery bag full of food. 😬
It was a long day: rushing to our flight to LA (they paged us several times to get on the plane), 4 hour layover in LA, walking around the airport, watching planes come in and go out, counting the number of foreign planes, playing yam slam, doing squats and push-ups and wall sits and laps in an open area, playing with bouncy balls, finally getting on the plane to Maui, and sitting on the plane for 5 1/2 hours. The kids did so so well. I was very proud of them. Sawyer was a little hard, but he had missed a nap, so he was exhausted. He finally crashed a few hours into our flight. The kids watched a movie, colored, read, ate snacks, and complained a little about the flight taking so long.
The Maui airport was tiny, and so cute. We had to get checked in right as we got off the plane (Hawaii is super upright about covid), but then they let us into the state. 😂 We had a taxi waiting to pick us up and take us to our place. It took 45 minutes to get there from the airport and we were all super exhausted. It was around 8 when we got off the plane, and by the time we got to our condo, it was almost midnight, Utah time. Jack and Sawyer both fell asleep before we got there. It was fully dark on the drive, which was kind of a bummer, because it would have been a beautiful drive.
We went right to bed when we got in.
The next day being Sunday, we got up pretty early and unpacked a little and got ready for church. It was completely packed at church, and we barely had a place to sit in the back of the cultural hall. We made the girls go to Primary and classes, but it was more difficult for the boys. Jack wouldn't go, and Daniel took him to Sunday school with him, and eventually they both went into primary. I took Sawyer outside to walk around the church building. It was a beautiful day.
After church, we snacked and put Sawyer down for a nap. I drove out to Costco (over by the airport. Remember? 45 minute drive. It was a lovely drive) and Walmart and bought groceries, hopefully to last us much of the time we're here.
While I was gone, Daniel took the kids to the beach that's just a few minutes walk away from where we're staying. When I got back, we put together a quick dinner, and then they took me up to the beach too. It's a cute little beach, with a playground and trees. The sun set while we were there, and it was so beautiful. We were pretty excited to be in Hawaii.
